Cut and Choose

A rectangular cake, plain on the left and chocolate on the right. People who like chocolate differently can still each walk away with a fair share, by their own taste.

plain chocolate

Why it is fair

With two people, the cutter splits the cake so the two pieces are equal to the cutter. The chooser then takes the piece he or she likes better. The chooser cannot end below half, by the chooser’s own taste, and the cutter cannot complain: the cutter made the pieces equal. With three people, one person cuts three pieces that look equal to that person. The other two mark every piece that is at least a third of the cake to them. If they can each receive a different marked piece, they do, and the cutter keeps the last. If they both want only the same piece, the cutter takes a piece neither marked, and the other two cut-and-choose what remains.
