  1. Do this: Ask these out loud. Your child answers out loud; no paper needed.

    • Ask: “What number is one hundred more than 231?” Listen for: 331

  2. Say this: “Ten tens make one hundred. In 352 the 3 means 3 hundreds, the 5 means 5 tens and the 2 means 2 ones.”

Say this: “A zero holds a place: 305 has no tens.”

Say this: “Hundreds place: the third place from the right.”

  3. Show: 3 hundreds, 6 tens and 0 ones make what number?

    Say this: “3 × 100 = 300”

    Say this: “6 × 10 = 60”

    Say this: “300 + 60 + 0 = 360”

    Answer: 360

Show: Write the number in digits: six hundred fifty-three

Say this: “Read it in groups: six hundred fifty-three → 653”

    Answer: 653

  4. Do this: Your child does these with you. Let them try first; help only after a real try.

    2 hundreds, 8 tens, 8 ones

    Listen for: 288

    If stuck: 2 hundreds = 200

7 more practice items on the lesson page, and on Worksheet A and Worksheet B.

    • Writing 3005 for three hundred five.
  5. Each player draws three digit cards and arranges them to make the biggest number possible. Read it aloud. Biggest number wins.

  6. Say this: “Tell me what you learned today. Show me with your hands or the counters if you like.”

Listen for: Read and write three-digit numbers.

  7. Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

    Exodus 18:21 (KJV)

Tens, hundreds, thousands: Moses grouped the people as our number system groups digits.

  8. Count by hundreds to 1,000, by tens from any number, and by fives to 100.
