Steps

  1. Do this: Ask these out loud. Your child answers out loud; no paper needed.

    • Ask: “How much money is shown?” Listen for: 50¢
  2. Say this: “Count up from the price to the money paid. From 65¢ to $1: 5¢ makes 70¢, a dime 80¢, two dimes $1.00. Change: 35¢.”

    Say this: “Or subtract: 100 − 65 = 35.”

Say this: “Change: money given back when you pay more than the price.”

  3. Show: A loaf costs 64¢. You pay with $1.00. How much change do you get?

    Say this: “Subtract in cents: 100 − 64 = 36”

    Say this: “Check: 64 + 36 = 100”

    Say this: “Change: 36¢”

    Answer: 36¢

Show: Mary buys a basket of figs for $0.55. She pays with $1.00. How much change does she get?

    Say this: “Work in cents: 100 − 55 = 45”

    Say this: “Check: 55 + 45 = 100”

    Say this: “45 cents = $0.45”

Answer: $0.45. She gets $0.45 in change.

  4. Do this: Your child does these with you. Let them try first; help only after a real try.

Ask: A loaf costs 90¢. You pay with $1.00. How much change do you get?

    Listen for: 10¢

    If stuck: Subtract in cents: 100 − 90 = 10

Ask: A loaf costs 55¢. You pay with $1.00. How much change do you get?

    Listen for: 45¢

    If stuck: Subtract in cents: 100 − 55 = 45

Ask: A loaf costs 60¢. You pay with $1.00. How much change do you get?

    Listen for: 40¢

    If stuck: Subtract in cents: 100 − 60 = 40

7 more practice items on the lesson page, and on Worksheet A and Worksheet B.

    • Subtracting the wrong way: 65 − 100.
  5. Price items in cents. Your child buys with a dollar and you give change by counting up; then swap so your child is the shopkeeper.

  6. Say this: “Tell me what you learned today. Show me with your hands or the counters if you like.”

Listen for: Find change from $1.

  7. Count by 25s to 100. Count mixed coins: 25, 50, 60, 70, 75, 76.
