Steps

  1. Do this: Ask these out loud. Your child answers out loud; no paper needed.

    • Ask: “6 × 4” Listen for: 24
    • Ask: “3 × 9” Listen for: 27
    • Ask: “10 × 6” Listen for: 60
    • Ask: “5 × 2” Listen for: 10
    • Ask: “2 × 1” Listen for: 2
  2. Say this: “3 × 6 = 18, 6 × 3 = 18, 18 ÷ 3 = 6, 18 ÷ 6 = 3.”

    Say this: “Division undoes multiplication.”

Say this: “Fact family: related facts made from the same three numbers.”

  3. Show: Find the missing number: ___ ÷ 9 = 9

    Say this: “Think multiplication: 9 × 9 = 81”

    Say this: “Check: 81 ÷ 9 = 9”

    Answer: 81

    Show: 8 ÷ 2 = ___

    Say this: “Think multiplication: 2 × ___ = 8”

    Say this: “2 × 4 = 8”

    Answer: 4

  4. Do this: Your child does these with you. Let them try first; help only after a real try.

Ask: Write the fact family for 8, 4 and 32.

    Listen for: 8 × 4 = 32; 4 × 8 = 32; 32 ÷ 8 = 4; 32 ÷ 4 = 8

    If stuck: 8 × 4 = 32

Ask: Write the fact family for 4, 9 and 36.

    Listen for: 4 × 9 = 36; 9 × 4 = 36; 36 ÷ 4 = 9; 36 ÷ 9 = 4

    If stuck: 4 × 9 = 36

Ask: Write the fact family for 5, 3 and 15.

    Listen for: 5 × 3 = 15; 3 × 5 = 15; 15 ÷ 5 = 3; 15 ÷ 3 = 5

    If stuck: 5 × 3 = 15

7 more practice items on the lesson page, and on Worksheet A and Worksheet B.

  6. Say this: “Tell me what you learned today. Show me with your hands or the counters if you like.”

Listen for: Write fact families with × and ÷.

  7. Say the multiplication facts of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 as division facts.
