  1. Do this: Ask these out loud. Your child answers out loud; no paper needed.

    • Ask: “12 × 5” Listen for: 60
    • Ask: “2 × 5” Listen for: 10
    • Ask: “4 × 11” Listen for: 44
    • Ask: “4 × 9” Listen for: 36
    • Ask: “2 × 10” Listen for: 20
  2. Say this: “Show your work and check answers.”

    Say this: “Draw a bar model when a story is tricky.”

  3. Show: 3,702 − 1,467 = ___

    Say this: “Ones: 2 is less than 7, and the next place holds 0, so regroup from the hundreds: 7 becomes 6 and each 0 in between becomes 9.”

    Say this: “12 − 7 = 5”

    Say this: “Tens: 9 − 6 = 3”

    Say this: “Hundreds: 6 − 4 = 2”

    Say this: “Thousands: 3 − 1 = 2”

    Say this: “Check: 2,235 + 1,467 = 3,702”

    Answer: 2,235

    Show: Write < or > : \tfrac{1}{3} ___ \tfrac{2}{3}

    Say this: “The parts are the same size, so compare the numerators: 1 and 2.”

    Say this: “\tfrac{1}{3} < \tfrac{2}{3}”

    Answer: \tfrac{1}{3} < \tfrac{2}{3}

  4. Do this: Your child does these with you. Let them try first; help only after a real try.

    Ask: Round 418 to the nearest 100.

    Listen for: 400

    If stuck: 418 is between 400 and 500.

    Ask: Round 113 to the nearest 100.

    Listen for: 100

    If stuck: 113 is between 100 and 200.

    Ask: 9,088 − 1,129 = ___

    Listen for: 7,959

    If stuck: Ones: 8 is less than 9, so regroup 1 ten as 10 ones. The tens digit becomes 7.

    7 more practice items on the lesson page, and on Worksheet A and Worksheet B.

  5. Fill a grid with products. Call out facts such as “7 × 8”. Cover the products. Four in a row wins.

  6. Say this: “Tell me what you learned today. Show me with your hands or the counters if you like.”

    Listen for: Show what you have learned this year.

  7. Fact drill daily. Goal: all × and ÷ facts to 12 × 12 in 3 seconds.
