Steps

1. Do this together: Look at what you are wearing today. Name each piece in English. Today you learn the French names.

2. Read aloud: The story. One day Jesus sat on a hillside and taught a great crowd. He said, Do not worry about what you will wear. Look at the lilies of the field! They do not work and they do not sew, and yet even King Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of them. If God dresses the flowers so beautifully, He will surely take care of you. So we can get dressed each morning with thankful hearts: God gives us what we need.

Read aloud: How French sounds. In manteau and chapeau, the eau at the end says oh: mahn-TOH, shah-POH. In pantalon, both an and on are hummed. In chaussures, the u is the French ü: round your lips as for oo and say ee.

Read aloud: Say it and move. Put on a pretend coat: le manteau! Step into pants: le pantalon! Twirl in a dress: la robe! Tip your hat: le chapeau! Tie your shoes: les chaussures!

3. Do this: Say each word clearly; your child says it back twice. Point to a picture or the real thing when you can.

• le manteau [luh mahn-TOH]: coat
• le pantalon [luh pahn-tah-LOHN]: trousers; pants
• la robe [lah RUB]: dress
• le chapeau [luh shah-POH]: hat
• les chaussures [lay shoh-SÜR]: shoes
• la chemise [lah shuh-MEEZ]: shirt
4. Show: What do you wear on your head? Say it in French.

Say this: “We wear a hat.”

Say this: “Hat is le chapeau.”

Answer: Le chapeau.

Show: What do you put on your feet?

Say this: “We put on shoes.”

Say this: “Shoes are les chaussures.”

Answer: Les chaussures.

5. Do this: Ask out loud. Let your child try first; help only after a real try.

Ask: Say coat in French.

Listen for: Le manteau.

Ask: Say dress in French.

Listen for: La robe.

Ask: Say hat in French.

Listen for: Le chapeau.

6. Read aloud: Make a paper doll and paper clothes, and dress it in French.

Steps:

1. Draw a simple doll and cut it out.
2. Draw and cut out a coat, trousers, a dress, a hat and shoes.
3. A parent writes the French name on the back of each piece.
4. Dress the doll, saying each piece out loud: Voici le manteau!

Tips for you:

• Make clothes for hot days and cold days.
• Keep the pieces in an envelope for next lesson.

Done when your child can say:

• My doll has five clothes.
• I can name each one in French.
7. Do this: Your child picks one or more; you write the date.

1. Draw yourself dressed for church on Sunday. A parent writes the French names of your clothes with arrows.
8. Read aloud: A French beret is a soft, round, flat hat. Shepherds in the mountains of southern France wore them long ago, and now people everywhere think of the beret as a French hat.

• Saying the eau in chapeau as two sounds. It is just oh.
• Saying robe like the English robe. It is short: RUB.
9. Put a pile of big clothes at one end of the room. A parent calls out le chapeau! Run, put it on, and run back. Keep going until you are wearing everything, then take it off one by one, naming each piece.

10. Say this: “Tell me what you learned today.”

Listen for: Name five clothes in French.; Dress a paper doll in French.; Hear what Jesus said about the lilies of the field.

11. And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

Matthew 6:28 (KJV)

In the French Bible of Louis Segond (1910), this verse reads: Considérez comment croissent les lis des champs: ils ne travaillent ni ne filent; Jesus told us to look at the lilies of the field. God dresses the flowers, and He takes care of us too.
