Steps

1. Do this together: What time do you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner? Which meal is your favorite?

2. Read aloud: The big idea. 饭 means a meal (and cooked rice). Morning-meal is 早zǎo饭fàn, noon-meal 午wǔ饭fàn, evening-meal 晚wǎn饭fàn.

Read aloud: Tasty! 好 + 吃 = 好hǎo吃chī (good to eat), 好 + 喝 = 好hǎo喝hē (good to drink). 我wǒ饿è了le means I’m hungry (now). 你nǐ想xiǎng吃chī什shén么me? asks what someone would like.

Read aloud: At the table. Chinese meals are often shared: dishes in the middle, each person with a bowl of rice. It is polite to serve others first and to say 我吃饱了 (I’m full) at the end. Christian families thank God before eating: 感谢主 (gǎnxiè zhǔ), thank the Lord.

3. Do this: Say each word clearly; your child says it back twice. Point to a picture or the real thing when you can.

• 早饭 (zǎofàn) [dzao-FAHN]: breakfast
• 午饭 (wǔfàn) [woo-FAHN]: lunch
• 晚饭 (wǎnfàn) [wahn-FAHN]: dinner
• 饿 (è) [uh (falling)]: hungry
• 好吃 (hǎochī) [how-CHR]: tasty
• 想 (xiǎng) [shyahng (dipping)]: to want to; think
4. Show: Say “I’m hungry. I want to eat noodles.”

Say this: “Hungry now = 饿了.”

Say this: “Want to eat = 想吃.”

Answer: 我饿了. 我想吃面条.

Show: Your grandma’s soup is delicious. What do you say?

Say this: “Soup is drunk in Chinese: 喝汤.”

Say this: “Tasty drink = 好喝.”

Answer: 奶奶, 汤很好喝!

5. Do this: Ask out loud. Let your child try first; help only after a real try.

Ask: What is 早饭?

Listen for: Breakfast.

Ask: Say “tasty” for food.

Listen for: 好吃.

Ask: Ask “What would you like to eat?”

Listen for: 你想吃什么?

6. Read aloud: Make egg fried rice or simple dumplings with a parent.

Steps:

1. Wash hands and set out the ingredients, naming each in Chinese.
2. Cook together, following the parent’s lead.
3. Set the table with bowls and chopsticks.
4. Pray, eat and say 好吃! and 我吃饱了.

Tips for you:

• Use only Chinese at the table for the first five minutes.

Done when your child can say:

• I named the ingredients in Chinese.
• I used three meal phrases at the table.
7. Read aloud: A common greeting in China used to be 你吃了吗? (Have you eaten?), a kind way of asking how someone is.

• Saying 好吃 for drinks. Drinks are 好喝.
• Saying 我是饿. Adjectives do not take 是: 我饿了 or 我很饿.
8. Set up a restaurant with a menu from Lesson 5.1. Waiter: 你想吃什么? Customer orders, eats pretend food and says 好吃! 多少钱?

9. Say this: “Tell me what you learned today.”

Listen for: Say 早饭, 午饭 and 晚饭.; Say 我饿了 (I’m hungry) and 好吃 / 好喝 (tasty).; Ask 你想吃什么? (what would you like to eat?).

10. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)

Chinese Union Version (和合本): 所以,你们或吃或喝,无论做什么,都要为荣耀 神而行。Suǒ yǐ, nǐ men huò chī huò hē, wú lùn zuò shén me, dōu yào wèi róng yào Shén ér xíng. Whether we eat or drink, we can do it to the glory of God, with thanks.
