Do this together: Say кни́га, ру́чка, каранда́ш, тетра́дь. How do you say hi to a friend in Russian? (Приве́т!) Grown-ups get a special, polite hello. Today you learn it.
Read aloud: The story. When Jesus was twelve years old, His family went to the temple in Jerusalem. On the way home, Mary and Joseph could not find Him. They looked for three days, and at last they found Him in the temple, sitting with the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone was amazed at how well He understood. Then He went home and obeyed His parents, and He grew in wisdom.
Read aloud: How Russian sounds. Шко́ла is SHKOH-luh. Учи́тель is oo-CHEE-teel’, and a woman teacher is учи́тельница (oo-CHEE-teel’-nee-tsuh). Russian children greet their teacher with Здра́вствуйте! (ZDRAHST-vooy-tee) and leave with До свида́ния! (duh svee-DAH-nee-yuh). Use приве́т and пока́ only with friends and family.
Read aloud: Say it and move. Stand up straight when the teacher comes in: Здра́вствуйте! Wave politely at the door: До свида́ния!
Do this: Say each word clearly; your child says it back twice. Point to a picture or the real thing when you can.
- шко́ла (shkola) [SHKOH-luh]: school
- учи́тель (uchitel) [oo-CHEE-teel]: teacher (man)
- учи́тельница (uchitelnitsa) [oo-CHEE-teel-nee-tsuh]: teacher (woman)
- здра́вствуйте! (zdravstvuyte!) [ZDRAHST-vooy-tee]: hello
- до свида́ния! (do svidaniya!) [dah svee-DAH-nee-yuh]: goodbye

Read aloud: In Russia, children call their teacher by first name and father’s name together, like Мари́я Ива́новна (Maria, daughter of Ivan). It is the polite way to speak to grown-ups.
- Saying every letter of Здра́вствуйте. The first в is silent: ZDRAHST-vooy-tee.
- Saying приве́т to a teacher. Use the polite Здра́вствуйте! with grown-ups.
One person knocks and comes in as a teacher, a grandma, a friend or a little brother. The child answers with the right greeting: Здра́вствуйте! or Приве́т!
Say this: “Tell me what you learned today.”

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
In the Russian Bible (Synodal translation), this verse reads: Иисус же преуспевал в премудрости и возрасте Jesus grew up as a boy just as you are growing: in wisdom, in size, and in favour with God and people.
